Ill. Senate Approves New Nuclear Plants

On Monday, the Illinois Senate overturned a 23-year-old ban on building new nuclear plants in the state.

The measure passed with a vote of 40-1. If passed by the House, the legislation would allow Illinois to contend for future federal dollars going to new nuclear plants in the form of construction loan guarantees.

Illinois currently has 14 nuclear reactors, which in 2008 supplied 48% of the state’s power—almost exactly the same percentage as coal—according to the Energy Information Administration.
